ARU is working in partnership with Kortext to provide eligible level 4 students with a personal e-textbook for each module.

For students at ARU-Peterborough, Kortext is working with ARU to provide an e-textbooks for every module.

FAQ for students

  • What is the difference between an e-textbook and an e-book?

An e-textbook is a provided to an individual student for them to use for their studies. You don't share it with anyone else, you have your own personal copy which you access via your Kortext account.

An e-book is a library book that you borrow for a short time and return to the library, in a similar way to print books you find on library shelves.

Each e-textbook we get from Kortext is also available to all ARU staff and students as an e-book to borrow.

Level 4 (year 1, or year 2 following a foundation year) students who started their course in September 2025 or January 2025, who are not studying on a distance learning course or a degree apprentice course, are all eligible to receive an e-textbook for every module they are studying at level 4.

All ARU-Peterborough students receive an e-textbook for every module at all levels.

  • How do I access my e-textbook?

You will receive an email from Kortext when your e-textbook is available. You'll need to set up your account by following the link from the email. You can then login to kortext.com, or the Kortext app to read your e-textbooks. Kortext uses your ARU account so you don't need to use a different username or password to access your e-textbooks.

Please note that you will also be able to access the book on Library Search. Once you are logged in, Kortext will recognise you and show you your e-textbooks on the Kortext bookshelf.

  • How long can I access the e-textbook for?

Your e-textbooks are available from 1st September to 31st August. If you use the e-book version, they are available for 7 days at a time (with unlimited renewals).

  • When do I receive the email to activate my Kortext account and what does it look like?

You will receive an email to your @student.aru.ac.uk email address from Kortext as soon as the book is ready. The email will contain the information you need to access your Kortext e-textbook.

  • What will my Kortext bookshelf look like?

You can access your Kortext bookshelf by logging in to www.kortext.com with your ARU account. It will display all your e-textbooks plus any extra Kortext e-books you have borrowed.

If you have received an email from Kortext to let you know that your Kortext e-textbooks are available and you are unable to access your Kortext account on www.kortext.com please contact support@kortext.com with your student email address to resolve the problem.

You will need to login to Library Search with your usual ARU student account to access any of our e-books. Please ensure you have done that and if you still can’t access the Kortext e-book to borrow it for 7 days, please use the “Report a Problem” link on Library Search to let us know there is a problem with this particular book.

If you get the error message "The token is not available" this usually means that the e-book you have downloaded has expired and you need to wait until the next day to download again.

  • Is there an app?

Yes, there is. You must activate your account online before trying to login via the app. Once you have activated your account, you can download the Kortext app for iOS and Android as well as for Windows desktop.

You can download your e-textbooks on the app to read them offline, so we recommend using the app to get full access to your books.

  • I haven't received an email from Kortext

Please check you are eligible for receiving an e-textbook from us first.

If you are eligible and you have completed your registration please check the spam folder of your student email inbox. The email is sent to your student email address and will be from Kortext (please see above for an example of how the email looks).

If you registered more than a few days ago, checked your spam folder of your student email address, and haven’t yet received an email from Kortext, please contact support@kortext.com

If you have changed your course since you first registered, and you don't have the right e-textbooks, then please contact Kortext at support@kortext.com

  • I don't get Kortext e-textbooks, can I access Kortext e-books from the library catalogue?

Where the publisher has agreed, we have added Kortext e-books to Library Search for all ARU staff and students to access. When you access a Kortext e-book you will be asked to choose your institution. Simply, search "anglia ruskin" and then click on Anglia Ruskin University when it comes up as an option. The e-book will be on the bookshelf in your account and will be available to you for 7 days. If 7 days is not long enough to read the book, you can search for and access the Kortext e-book again and it will add to your bookshelf again (please wait until the next day to do this).

  • My students are telling me that they can’t access their Kortext e-textbook

Please contact Kortext support at support@kortext.com or ask your students to contact Kortext support at this address.

You can check Library Search and see if the Kortext e-book version is available for students to read as an interim measure.

There is a minimum of a 5 day turnaround from the library sending the details of the e-textbook required to Kortext provisioning for your students, so if you have confirmed your e-textbook title recently you may just have to wait a few more days.

  • How do I get access to my Kortext e-textbooks?

All those teaching on level 4 modules with students eligible for a Kortext e-textbook, or any module at ARU-Peterborough, should have a Kortext account. You should have had an email from Kortext to your ARU email address. If this is not the case, please contact Kortext support with the module codes of the modules you are teaching on and they will help you get set up on Kortext. Along with the titles, you'll be able to see the analytics associated with them.

  • I'm having problems accessing my e-textbook / my e-textbook isn't on the bookshelf?

Please contact support@kortext.com if you are having any difficulties accessing your e-textbooks or if you don't have the e-textbooks you think you should have.

Yes, there is. You must activate your account online before trying to login via the app. Once you have activated your account, you can download the Kortext app for iOS and Android as well as for Windows desktop.

We recommend downloading the app so you can download your books and use them offline.

  • How do I access the analytics?

You can access the analytics for your Kortext e-textbooks by logging in to your Kortext account at www.kortext.com. You will find an Analytics icon on the top right of your screen. Here you will see information on each individual student on your module who has access to Kortext e-textbooks. You will be able to check if they have activated their account, started reading the book and how much of the book they have read. More information on accessing the analytics can be found here.
